Drunk driving in Pattaya, Thailand

What is considered drunk driving in Pattaya when on a moped? I would love to have some clarification on what the law is.

I heard somewhere that if you had two or more drinks you were not permitted to drive in Thailand.

The legal age for driving motorcycles (mopeds)and cars in Thailand (and Pattaya) is 18, but many Thai "kids" younger than 18 drive motorcycles. A little clue there.

The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.5 milligrams per liter of blood and 0.2 milligrams for drivers who held their driver license for less than 5 years. That is what the law says.

As in all countries, drunk driving is a huge problem in Thailand, but the penalties for drunk driving in Thailand are not as severe and enforcement of the law is very lax.

A friend of mine, who is living in Bangkok, told me that police start to pull over drivers and do breathalyzer tests in Bangkok. So far nothing in Pattaya.

I and other foreigerns living in Pattaya have been stopped by police for all the reasons (mostly not wearing a helmet - 400 Baht fine) but not for DUI.

I myself would not want to find out what happens when you are involved in an accident under the influence (especially if someone got hurt or worse).

If you are stopped by the police, you can do what most of the local Thai people and Expats do, offer to pay the fine on the spot so you avoid going to the police station.

Most fines are between 200-500 Baht.

I hope this clarifies things and everything else regarding this matter would have to be discussed while drinking a "cold one".
