Khao Laem Ya National Park

Koh Samet Thailand became part of the Khao Laem Ya national park in 1981 and that's why it isn't as much of a construction site as other Islands. But occasional building of new Bungalows is going on. The Island is a popular weekend get-away for people from Bangkok and Pattaya as well. It can get a little busy on weekends and on National Holidays you will certainly have Thai people visiting the Island.

Make Sure You Catch The Right Boat

By the Time of this writing the national park entrance fee any foreign visitors will have to pay when entering at Na Dan Pier is 200 Baht. If you catch a boat at Ban Phe Pier please note that many Bungalow Operators run their own boats and will take you to their Bungalow Resort.

Bangkok-Pattaya To Koh Samet

Koh Samet Thailand is only about 3 1/2 hours from Bangkok and about a 2 hour journey from Pattaya, plus another 30-40 minutes by Boat or Ferry from a pier in Ban Phe. Of course you can also hire a speed boat and reach the Island in several minutes. Koh Samet does not have an airport so you most likely will arrive in Ban Phe by bus.

Getting Around

Many of the roads, in particularly further down south of the Island, are only dirt roads and they are not in a very good condition. They are washed out and are very bumpy with many deep ruts. It is possible to explore the Island by foot. Songtheows travel between the main beaches.

Motorbikes can be rented but are more expensive than on the mainland because they need a lot more maintenance because of the road conditions and they also have thicker tires. Quads or four-wheelers (ATV) seem to be the preferred means of transportation for many tourists because they handle well in rough terrain.... and there is plenty of that.

Nightlife

Silver Sands Resort at the southern end of the beach offers a beachside bar that turns into a disco when crowds are large enough. Most other beaches clam down when the restaurants close. A specialty at Ao Phai are the drinks which served by the bucket.
